Toyota 4Runner Brake Squeal: Four Visits, Two Rotor Jobs, and What Finally Worked

If you bought a 2025 4Runner and it shrieks every time you back out of the garage, you are not imagining it, you are not being precious about a new truck, and — based on four service visits over roughly six months — your dealer probably isn’t going to fix it on the first try.
Or the second. Or the third.
This is the complete repair history: every date, every mileage, every part number, and the honest answer to what finally made it stop. That last part matters, because the obvious conclusion — “they replaced the rotors” — is wrong. The rotors were replaced twice. The first time didn’t work.
The symptom
We took delivery new in the fall of 2025. The squeal started almost immediately.
Back out of a parking spot and the front brakes let out a high, metallic squeal — loud enough that people turn around in parking lots. Early on it followed a pattern I could live with: worst when the truck was cold or had been sitting, then quiet after a few minutes of driving. Heat cycle the brakes and it went away.
Then the pattern eroded. It stopped clearing itself, started happening warm, and spread from pure reverse into low-speed forward braking — parking lots, drive-throughs, the crawling stops you make a dozen times a day.
The final repair order captured all of it — squeaking when backing up, and sometimes during low-speed braking in parking lots and drive-throughs — followed by the two words that matter more than anything else on a repair order: “concern verified.”
Stopping distance was fine. The pedal felt normal. It was purely noise — which is exactly what makes it hard to get fixed.

Every repair was covered under warranty. Total out of pocket across all four visits for the brake work: zero. The only charge on the final invoice was the routine 10,000-mile service.
Why “they replaced the rotors” is the wrong takeaway
This is the part I’d want another owner to read carefully.
At visit 3, the dealer found a surface and texture defect in the front rotors and replaced both — part 43512-60281, the front rotor listed on my repair order — along with fresh pads, shims, and grease. That already went beyond what the TSB calls for.
The squeal came back anyway.
At visit 4, four months later, two things were different, and I can’t tell you which one mattered:
- The rotors were replaced again, this time described on the repair order as “updated rotors.”
- A Toyota field technical specialist — a factory rep, not dealer staff — verified that the TSB parts were properly installed and the lubricant was in the correct locations.
The repair order notes the concern as verified, records that TSB 0046-25 had already been performed, and then gives the instruction that matters:
“Per Toyota we are to replace front rotors with updated rotors and have field tech verify TSB 0046-25 is properly performed.”

The tech then documented replacing the front rotors and confirming the TSB pads and shims were properly installed with lubricant in the correct locations, followed by a road test.
Read that instruction again. Toyota’s own direction assumes the possibility that the TSB work had not been done correctly — otherwise, why dispatch a factory tech to check parts installed five months earlier?
So there are three live explanations, and I can’t separate them:
- The “updated” rotor is genuinely a different part than the one installed at visit 3.
- The earlier TSB installation had an error — grease in the wrong place, a shim seated wrong — and the field tech caught it.
- Some combination, or the cumulative effect of everything being fresh at once.
The rotor part number for visit 4 doesn’t appear on my invoice, because warranty parts aren’t itemized on the customer copy. The only parts listed are the oil filter and six quarts of 0W-20. I asked. I don’t have it.
What I can document with certainty: rotor replacement alone did not fix this truck. Rotor replacement plus factory field tech verification of the TSB work did.
If you take one line to your service advisor, make it that one.
The TSB trail: two bulletins and two revisions in ten months
T-SB-0046-25 — July 24, 2025
The first official acknowledgment. Covers 2024–2025 Land Cruiser and 2025 4Runner / 4Runner Hybrid. Condition: “the front brakes produce a squealing noise when driving in reverse.” (bulletin PDF, hosted by NHTSA)

Note what isn’t on that list: rotors. Hold that thought.
And note the bulletin’s own hedge — it describes the procedure as one that will reduce the possibility of the condition. Not eliminate it. Toyota told you the confidence level in the document itself.
T-SB-0046-25 Rev1 — September 4, 2025
Exactly six weeks later, a revision whose only change was the parts list: the anti-rattle spring fitting kit became 04947-60140 in place of 04947-0C030. (Rev1 PDF)
It is tempting to read that as an early fix getting superseded by a better one. Don’t. The current bulletin lists both springs and adds a footnote: “Only one part is necessary. Both part numbers are interchangeable components; either one can be used.” Whichever spring your dealer installed, Toyota considers it the right part.
T-SB-0006-26 — February 11, 2026
Supersedes T-SB-0046-25 entirely — the supersession notice declares the older bulletin obsolete — and widens coverage to 2024–2026 Land Cruiser and 2025–2026 4Runner / 4Runner Hybrid. Owners report a further revision dated May 19, 2026; I could not find that revision published anywhere I could verify, so treat the date as a community report. Two bulletins and two revisions in ten months for a squeak — and the newer one widens the affected years rather than narrowing them. Toyota does not iterate like that on a fix that’s working.
The 4Runner bulletin is the only one that leaves out the rotors
This is the part I did not expect to find, and it is the closest thing to an answer for why two rotor jobs were needed on a truck whose bulletin never asked for one.
Toyota and Lexus have issued the same brake-squeal bulletin across most of the TNGA-F lineup. Line them up side by side and the pad kit, the shim kit, the grease and the anti-rattle spring are the same parts. One thing is not the same: on the GX, LX, Tundra and Sequoia, Toyota specifies two new front discs and pays the dealer twice the labor. On the 4Runner and Land Cruiser, it does not.

All three bulletins call for the same 04465-34040 pad kit, the same 04945-0C060 shim kit, the same 08887-80609 caliper grease, and an anti-rattle spring from the same interchangeable pair. All three describe the same condition and all three promise only to reduce the possibility of it. The Lexus bulletin got there first, on October 8, 2024 — about nine and a half months before Toyota acknowledged it on the 4Runner.
I want to be careful about what this does and does not prove. It does not prove the 4Runner needs rotors; Toyota engineers had reasons I can’t see, and the front brake hardware is not identical across every one of these trucks. What it does establish is that “the Lexus fix is more aggressive” — a thing you will read on every owner forum — is not a rumor. It is in the manufacturers’ own documents, in the parts tables and the labor times. And on my truck, the repair that finally held was the one that included rotors.
One more thing worth knowing if you own the Lexus: the bulletin for the GX 550 and LX describes the noise as occurring “when driving forward or in reverse,” as does the Tundra and Sequoia bulletin. Only the 4Runner and Land Cruiser version limits it to reverse — which matches what happened to mine as the problem got worse.
This is a platform problem, not a 4Runner problem
Toyota’s TNGA-F body-on-frame architecture underpins the 4Runner, Land Cruiser, Tacoma, Tundra, Sequoia, Lexus GX, and Lexus LX. Toyota and Lexus have now issued front-brake-squeal bulletins covering six of those. The complaints track the platform too.

What the owner communities figured out
These come from owner forums, not Toyota documents. Treat them as leads worth raising with your dealer, not established fact.
- 2WD may fare worse. Community reports suggest the TSB holds better on 4WD trucks. Mine is a 2WD SR5, and it took four visits. Worth saying plainly: no Toyota bulletin distinguishes 2WD from 4WD, in either the applicability tables or the parts lists, so there is no documented mechanism for a drivetrain difference. One truck is not a sample.
- Pad packaging may indicate different compounds. A Land Cruiser forum member reported that swapping between Toyota “white box” and “red box” pads eliminated the squeal. This is the thinnest claim on this page and it cuts against the documents: the bulletins specify a single pad kit number, 04465-34040, across the 4Runner, Land Cruiser, Tundra, Sequoia, GX and LX.
- Dealers were told a revision was coming. One service manager reportedly said Toyota would need to “modify the existing TSB.” Corporate was still telling owners they were “working on a fix” more than seven months after the original bulletin.
The door rattle: three visits, two wrong root causes
Same truck, separate defect, and a useful lesson in how a rattle gets misdiagnosed.
The symptom: vibration and rattle from the driver’s door when playing music with bass. It would stop briefly when the window was rolled down and back up, and when pressing firmly on the door panel. A separate metallic rattle came from the seatbelt/B-pillar area.
- Visit 2 (Nov 2025): dealer replaced the entire driver door panel, listed on my repair order as part 67620-35D50-C1. Rattle returned.
- Visit 3 (Dec 2025): dealer added foam insulation inside the door panel — in the wrong location. Rattle persisted.
- Visit 4 (Apr 2026): resolved.
Owner-community research across several long threads pointed at three distinct sources, with one dominant:
- The window run bracket — the metal guide holding the window channel inside the door — making metal-on-metal contact with the door frame. Bass frequencies set it buzzing. The diagnostic tells are exactly what I was experiencing: rolling the window down changes the load on the bracket, and pressing the panel changes contact pressure. A forum member posted a step-by-step video of the bracket removal and insulation fix in November 2025, and multiple owners confirmed it.
- The door card’s top edge seating in its groove, a secondary buzz some owners still had after fixing the bracket.
- The seatbelt retractor in the B-pillar — a separate rattle frequently blamed on the door because of proximity.
At visit 4 I couldn’t reproduce the rattle on the ride-along — of course. So the field tech used a tone generator to sweep frequencies and exposed it: the driver’s front door glass run, right where the lower and upper sections meet. Exactly what the community had identified. Light felt padding went on the glass run contact points, foam padding on all door panel contact points while it was apart, then retested with several types of music and the tone generator. Test passed.
A telling footnote: owners report that Toyota made production changes for the 2026 model year — filler and rubber added to the interior door panels specifically to eliminate popping and clicking noise, plus added hood and engine bay sound dampening. That’s dealer-sourced information circulating on the forums rather than a published Toyota document, so weigh it accordingly. But if accurate, Toyota addressed the door noise for the next model year. The brakes are a different story: T-SB-0006-26 extends brake coverage to the 2026 4Runner and the 2026 Land Cruiser, so whatever else changed for 2026, the squeal did not get engineered out.
What to do if this is your truck
- Get a repair order every visit, and check it says “concern verified.” Consistent complaint language across visits is what makes a repair history legible later. A visit where the dealer couldn’t duplicate the problem is nearly worthless to you.
- Cite the current bulletin — and expect the old number. Ask for T-SB-0006-26. Lexus owners: the bulletin I can verify is L-SB-0036-24, covering the 2024 GX 550 and 2022–2024 LX 600; owners report a newer L-SB-0053-25 extending it to later years and the LX 700h. My spring 2026 repair order still referenced TSB 0046-25 by name, months after it was superseded. Dealer systems lag.
- If the TSB already failed once, don’t just ask for it again. Ask for a Toyota field technical specialist to verify the previous installation. That request — not a fourth set of pads — is what broke the loop on my truck.
- Escalate past the dealer. Toyota Brand Engagement, 1-800-331-4331. Get a case number and let corporate contact the dealer. The field tech only appeared after case management got involved.
- File with NHTSA at nhtsa.gov/report-a-safety-problem. Complaint volume is what moves a bulletin toward a recall, and it’s why this article can cite numbers instead of anecdotes.
- Know your state’s lemon law threshold. Most build a presumption around four repair attempts for the same defect, or roughly 30 days out of service, within a window from delivery. Missouri’s statute is a fair illustration of the shape: four attempts or 30 cumulative working days, within one year of delivery or the express warranty term — whichever ends first — no mileage cap, and written notice to the manufacturer is a prerequisite, not optional. Missouri, like many states, also lets a manufacturer defend by arguing the defect doesn’t substantially impair use, value, or safety — which is precisely the fight a noise complaint invites, and precisely why “concern verified” belongs on your paperwork. Rules vary by state and I’m not a lawyer; at attempt four, talk to one.

Why do my 4Runner brakes only squeal in reverse?
Toyota's bulletins do not state a cause — they describe the condition and the remedy only. The generally accepted explanation among technicians is that pad position shifts in the caliper when rotation reverses, setting up a resonance the anti-rattle hardware doesn't fully damp. What Toyota does document is the condition itself: the 4Runner and Land Cruiser bulletins name it as squealing "when driving in reverse." Notably, the sibling bulletins for the Tundra, Sequoia, GX and LX describe the same condition as occurring "when driving forward or in reverse."
Which Toyota and Lexus models are affected?
Toyota T-SB-0006-26 covers 2024-2026 Land Cruiser and 2025-2026 4Runner and 4Runner Hybrid. Toyota T-SB-0022-25 Rev1 covers 2022-2026 Tundra and Tundra Hybrid and 2023-2026 Sequoia Hybrid. Lexus L-SB-0036-24 covers the 2024 GX 550 and 2022-2024 LX 600; owners report a later bulletin, L-SB-0053-25, extending that to newer model years and the LX 700h. That is six of the eight nameplates on Toyota's TNGA-F body-on-frame platform.
Is the brake squeal covered under warranty?
Yes. Every bulletin states the repair is covered under the Toyota Basic Warranty, 36 months or 36,000 miles from the in-service date, whichever comes first. The Lexus bulletin cites the Lexus Basic Warranty, 48 months or 50,000 miles. All four of my visits were no-charge for the brake work, including both rotor replacements.
Is the 4Runner brake squeal dangerous?
Nothing in the bulletins or in my experience points to reduced braking performance. Stopping distance was fine and the pedal felt normal throughout. It is a noise complaint — which is exactly why it is hard to get taken seriously, and why documentation matters.
Will the TSB fix last?
Often not. Owners report the squeal returning within one to four weeks after the pads-and-shims repair, and the bulletin itself only promises to "reduce the possibility" of the condition. Mine failed twice before it held.
My dealer already did the TSB and the squeal came back. Now what?
That was my position after visits 2 and 3 — including a rotor replacement that did not hold. What worked was Toyota corporate assigning a field technical specialist who replaced the rotors with updated parts and verified the prior TSB installation. Ask for factory field tech involvement by name; it is a different conversation from asking the dealer to try again.

Four visits over roughly six months, from under 700 miles to a little over 8,000. The final repair has held five months and counting.
